Helping people access support when they need it most

At Broxtowe Women’s Project, we are proud to support Ask for Angela, a simple but powerful initiative that helps people access discreet support when they feel unsafe, vulnerable or at risk in public spaces. Ask for Angela enables anyone who needs help to approach staff at a participating venue or organisation and ask for “Angela” as a discreet way of signalling that they require assistance. Staff are trained to recognise the request and provide support in a calm, safe and confidential manner.

Originally launched to improve safety in pubs, bars and clubs, the scheme has since expanded into a wide range of settings, helping create safer environments for everyone. Importantly, Ask for Angela is available to anyone, regardless of age, gender or background, who may be feeling uncomfortable, threatened or vulnerable.

Why it matters

Domestic abuse, harassment, control and unwanted attention can happen anywhere. For many people, asking directly for help can feel difficult or even impossible in the moment.

Ask for Angela helps remove that barrier by providing a simple phrase that allows someone to discreetly alert staff that they need support. Whether that means helping someone leave safely, contacting a friend or family member, arranging transport, alerting security or contacting emergency services, the scheme provides an important safety net for those who need it.

At Broxtowe Women’s Project, we know how important early intervention can be. Creating safe spaces and encouraging people to seek help without fear or judgement is a vital part of preventing harm and supporting those experiencing abuse.

Creating safer communities together

As part of our commitment to raising awareness of domestic abuse and violence against women and girls, we actively promote initiatives that help people feel safer and more confident when accessing support.

We encourage local businesses, hospitality venues, community organisations and employers to learn more about Ask for Angela and consider implementing the scheme within their own settings. The initiative is free to adopt and is supported by resources, guidance and training materials to help staff respond appropriately when someone asks for help.
