Supporting safer, more inclusive places to be active
Everyone should feel able to move, exercise and take part in community activities without feeling unsafe, intimidated or excluded.
Broxtowe Women’s Project is working alongside Active Derbyshire and Active Notts to help develop practical guidance for organisations, businesses and professionals who shape, manage or influence the places where women and girls are active.
This includes indoor and outdoor spaces such as:
- Gyms and leisure centres
- Parks and green spaces
- Walking and running routes
- Canals and waterways
- Community venues
- Sports facilities
- Public spaces
- Cafés and other venues close to activity spaces
The guidance brings together experience from organisations working directly with women and girls, including those affected by domestic abuse, alongside insight from community and physical activity services.

Our Making Spaces Safer for Women and Girls guide includes practical recommendations around:
- Creating physically and psychologically safer spaces
- Staff and volunteer training
- Female-friendly activities
- Communication and signposting
- Useful resources and further support
