Step Into Strength: How Walking Can Support Healing and Wellbeing

This May, Nottinghamshire is celebrating movement, connection, and community through the Walk Notts Festival 2026. A month filled with walks designed for all abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.

But walking is more than just physical activity.
For many women and children, especially those affected by domestic abuse, it can be a gentle, powerful step towards healing.

A Safe Step Forward

For those who have experienced domestic abuse, the world can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Walking offers something simple but important:

  • A chance to feel safe in open spaces
  • Time away from pressure and noise
  • An opportunity to rebuild confidence at your own pace

You don’t have to go far. Even a short walk can help create a sense of calm and control.

Supporting Mental Wellbeing

Walking has been shown to help reduce anxiety, improve mood, and ease stress.

But more than that, it creates space.

Space to breathe.
Space to think.
Space to begin again.

Many walks in the programme focus specifically on wellbeing, including:

  • Mindfulness walks
  • “Walk and Talk” sessions
  • Gentle community strolls

These are designed to support both emotional and mental health in a relaxed, non-judgemental environment.

You Are Not Alone

One of the hardest parts of domestic abuse can be feeling isolated.

Walking with others can help change that.

Across Nottinghamshire, there are opportunities to:

  • Meet others in a safe, supportive setting
  • Share conversation (or simply walk quietly alongside others)
  • Build connections without pressure

From community walks to social groups like “Chatty Café walks” and family-friendly sessions, there are many ways to reconnect at your own pace.

Gentle, Inclusive and Accessible

We understand that everyone’s journey is different.

That’s why it’s so important that walking is accessible to all:

  • Buggy walks for parents and carers
  • Gentle walks for beginners
  • Disability-friendly “roll and stroll” sessions
  • Supportive group environments

There is no expectation, no pressure; just the opportunity to take part in a way that feels right for you.

Reconnecting With Yourself and Nature

Spending time outdoors can be incredibly grounding.

Nature helps to:

  • Reduce feelings of overwhelm
  • Improve mood and focus
  • Create moments of peace

Whether it’s a park, woodland, or riverside path, being outside can help you reconnect not just with nature but also with yourself.

Small Steps Can Lead to Big Changes

Healing doesn’t happen all at once.

It happens in small steps.

A short walk.
A moment of fresh air.
A conversation with someone who understands.

These small moments build strength over time.
