Safer Internet Day 2026: Smart Tech, Safe Choices

Safer Internet Day 2026 focuses on the theme “Smart tech, safe choices – exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.” As technology becomes more embedded in everyday life, this year’s theme encourages us to think not just about innovation, but about safety, consent and responsibility too.

AI and smart technology can bring real benefits from helping us organise daily life to improving access to information and services. But like any technology, it can also be misused. When systems are used to monitor, track or control someone without their knowledge or consent, technology becomes a tool for harm rather than help.

At Broxtowe Women’s Project, we support women and families affected by domestic abuse, including technology-facilitated abuse. This can include the misuse of tracking devices, location sharing, access to phones or accounts, and increasingly, smart or AI-enabled technology that blurs the line between convenience and control.

Safer Internet Day is an important reminder that staying safe online isn’t only about passwords or privacy settings. It’s also about recognising boundaries, understanding consent, and trusting your instincts when something doesn’t feel right. As AI continues to develop, conversations about ethics, transparency and safety are more important than ever — particularly for those who may already be vulnerable.
