Ask for Angela: Supporting Safer Venues Across Nottinghamshire
Broxtowe Women’s Project is proud to support Ask for Angela, a nationally recognised scheme that helps people feel safe on a night out.
The concept is simple. If someone feels vulnerable, uncomfortable or unsafe – whether on a date that isn’t going well or in any situation where they need discreet help – they can approach a member of staff and simply “Ask for Angela.” Trained staff will recognise this as a request for help, discreetly take the person to a safe space, and provide appropriate support, whether that’s reuniting them with a friend, calling a taxi, or helping them leave the venue safely.
Hayley Crawford KPM, creator of the Ask for Angela scheme and former Bassetlaw Police District Commander, said:
“I am delighted that venues are implementing the scheme, helping customers and visitors feel safer while sending a clear message that those who wish to harass, intimidate or cause harm are not welcome in venues across Nottinghamshire.”
Venues that sign up send a clear message that they take customer welfare seriously. Participation helps build trust with customers, gives staff greater confidence in responding to difficult situations, and contributes to a safer, more welcoming night-time economy across the region.
Getting involved is straightforward and completely free. Venues can visit www.askforangela.org.uk to access free downloadable resources, including implementation checklists, posters, staff guidance and training materials to help teams respond confidently and appropriately.
We encourage every bar, pub, restaurant, hotel and club across Nottinghamshire to take a look, download the free resources and train their teams.
Safer socialising is something we can all play a part in.
Note: Venues can also contact Nottingham BID to receive localised Ask for Angela posters for display in their venue.
